Menopause is physiologic cessation of menses associated with advancing age in women. The average onset of menopause is 52 years. The common symptoms include hot flashes or night sweats, vaginal dryness, vaginal itching, abnormal vaginal bleeding, urinary urgency, urinary incontinence, osteoporosis, breast atrophy, decreased libido, palpitations, mood disturbances and fatigue. Menopause is suspected when there is a long interval without periods in a woman around the age of 50, particularly if a woman has hot flashes or a low estrogen profile.

Useful herbs

Alchemilla vulgaris

Helps reduce pains associated with periods as well as ameliorating excessive bleeding, in easing the changes of the menopause, for diarrhea, as a mouthwash for sores and ulcers and as a gargle for laryngitis

Aletris farinosa

Promotes the appetite and is used in the treatment of diarrhoea, rheumatism and jaundice, for expelling flatulence, for troubles arising from menopause and for various uterine disorders (root); It is used as a female tonic in loss of virility and for debility (decoction of the dried root); in stomach problems and bloody dysentery (infusion of the leaves).

Ballota nigra

For treating problems connected with the respiratory system, convulsions, low spirits and the menopause, in the treatment of nervous dyspepsia, travelling sickness, morning sickness in pregnancy, arthritis, gout, scanty menstrual flow and bronchitis.

Chamaelirium luteum

For the female reproductive system and has proved to be a beneficial remedy for menstrual problems, ovarian cysts and also help in the menopause (herb); amenorrhoea, dysmenorrhoea and leucorrhoea and also for a variety of ailments associated with the male and female reproductive organs (root)

Lavandula angustifolia

For mental problems associated with menopause, disorders associated with muscle tone of the autonomic nervous system, anxiety, digestive disorders, rheumatism and sciatica.

Leonurus cardiaca

Mainly directed toward the elderly; as a cardiotonic (in mental disorders associated with the autonomic nervous system), in prostate disorders, menopause, hysteria, heart palpitation, amenorrhoea, general weakness after fever and goiter

Ligustrum lucidum

For rheumatism (berries); for promoting perspiration (decoction of bark and leaf); nonlymphatic leukaemia, stimulate the immune system, reduce inflammation, may have beneficial effects on the liver, menopausal problems (especially premature menopause), blurred vision, cataracts, tinnitus, rheumatic pains, palpitations, backache and insomnia (fruit)

Pastinaca sativa

In the treatment of women's complaints (in menstrual cramps, premenstrual syndrome and menopausal disorders), psoriasis, vitiligo and bed wetting in chidren (root)

Pfaffia paniculata

As a general tonic for balancing, energizing, rejuvenating and muscle growth, for hormonal disorders (menopause, PMS etc),to lower serum cholesterol, for chronic fatigue and general tiredness, sexual disorders (impotency, frigidity, low libido etc), arteriosclerosis, diabetes, digestive disorders, rheumatism, bronchitis and sickle cell anemia.

Ruta graveolens

For colic, as an analgesic, in hysteria, giddiness, nervous headaches, palpitations and rheumatism (leaf); alleviating gall bladder stones, gallbladder pain and spasms, in amenorrhea and menopause (for hot flashes) (plant); as an emmenagogue, anthelmintic and in epilepsy (volatile oil); coughs, flatulence (flower infusion); alleviating pain.

Viburnum prunifolium

To treat gynecological conditions, including menstrual cramps, to prevent miscarriages, aiding recovery after childbirth, in treating the effects of menopause, dysentery, haemorrhage of the uterus, prolapse of the uterus, morning sickness, convulsive disorders, colic and other cramping pains that affect the bile ducts, hysteria, asthma and palpitations of a nervous origin (decoction)

Vitex agnus-castus

Pillows stuffed with leaves are slept on to remove catarrh and headache. Dried fruit is used to destroy human worm while seeds boiled in water and eaten, or the water is taken internally, to prevent spread of toxins from poisonous bites of animals, also cooling for skin disorders.
